Week 3 was the beginning of the collaborative assignment. This is usually something that I do not look forward to because there are so many components that I have to rely on others to complete. I have a difficult time trusting that others will complete work when my education, time and money are on the line. However, in my experience, in the online setting, collaborative work tends to go fairly well. When it hasn't went well, the instructor has stepped in to alleviate the stress of the situation. It has also helped to be placed in groups where there are commonalities so that we all understand each other. I also appreciate the specific instruction that guides the collaborative efforts. These are three key components that I will definitely use as I create collaborative communities within my classroom. I was hoping to avoid collaborative assignments, but I do see the value in building communities and social skill situations for the online environment. It can be very easy to shut out the rest of the class community, but learning does not really take place when that happens. Even though I'm never excited to begin collaboration, those are the situations in which I learn the most.
Week 3 also brought about the assessment information from Bronk. Honestly, it was overwhelming, but very insightful. The online world is a completely different beast in comparison to the face-to-face classroom. I appreciated the list of assessment techniques, and the information on which techniques work the best with the rationale as to why. What I thought would be great techniques or enhancements turned out not to be the best way to assess/relay learning in the online setting! Bronk's work will definitely be something I will want to keep tabs on!
